Covers and Cases For Books and Journals

Despite the widespread availability of digital technology, some people still prefer to use traditional methods of enjoying a good old fashioned reading experience. Instead of using electronic book readers, people want to actually hold a hardcover copy of their favorite title and flip through pages that have real printed text and graphics. I have ebooks but my favorites I have in traditional hard bound form as well. In order to protect these books, sometimes special cases are needed. After all, digital gadgets such as tablets are not the only items that need protection with stylish cases.

E-Books vs. Real Books

Some people prefer reading the written word. But I'm so used to reading ebooks, I find myself not being able to read the written word anymore. Once I finish reading one book, I don't need to go home and get another one and not only do I get to read without the lights on (for late-night-hiding-from-my-mom reading), but I can also read them from anywhere--from my tablet, desktops, laptops and even smartphones (making it far more portable than even the smallest pocketbook).

Every Day by David Levithan

This book is extremely popular on the internet and even among my real life book geek friends but to tell you honestly, I am nothing but disappointed with this.

Plot. The story seemed interesting enough in itself. 'A' isn't like any of us because one day he's one person, and the next, he's another. He doesn't mind switching bodies everyday, that is until he meets Rhiannon. It's not something we see very often so you can understand why it's piqued so many people's interest. The plot rotates on A's condition and his yearning to be with someone he knows he can't have. It sucks, you pity him but really, I thought there's going to be something else but that's it. Even when the author crafted this 'possession action', it was still very dry.

Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth

I first read Divergent almost a full year ago, it wasn't that great for me since I'm a sucker for awesome (really awesome) writing and it fell short of that. Story-wise though, it had great potential. The story is set in a dystopian world where people are required to live in conformity to a group, called faction, for the rest of their lives from age 16. The factions intend to fix a certain problem with the world, problems that caused the destruction of earlier generation. Some resolved to live in self-denial (Abnegation), knowledge (Erudite), peace (Amity), honesty (Candor) and courage (Dauntless). Their society discourages open thinking so it scares them to have people who have more than one aptitude for a faction. Beatrice Prior is one of those people and she's scared of herself, scared of something she doesn't even understand.

Book Haul #1

As you might have deduced by now, I'm a bit of a nerd. Well, one part of me is a hardcore-literary-parallel-searching type of nerd, while the other part is a closet-nerd. I actually prefer hardcore but all of you need closet nerd Penda. The one who pretends to not sniff books, not read ebooks on her tab and not hyperventilate at the sight of Rainbow Rowell / John Green's books. If it weren't for closet Penda, this blog would've been swarmed with literary puns and pretentious book reviews. This is closet nerd P's territory. Hardcore book geek's stuff is supposed to be at An Imperial Affliction. But since I'm (we're?) revamping the blog, hardcore nerd gets seven minutes of heaven! Muahahahaha! I have dominated you little earthlings!

Donuts, Books and #CatchingFire

Okay, I know I implied I would be updating more often and I intended too but as always, (brace yourselves, you're going to hear my most frequently used alibi yet) I was too caught up with RL (real life, cutie pies). Last week was a very busy week for my city, thus my Cagayan de Oro-niche blog, CDOSocial. I attended two Pre-Openings and a Presscon thing. Okay, that doesn't seem that much, but those filled my afternoons while school filled my mornings and Church, my evenings. But I'm glad I have something to do, beats being bored any day!

BREAKING BOOK NEWS, PEOPLE!

Last February, I blogged about The Fault In Our Stars the movie, and just last week / 2 weeks ago, they announced that Shailene Woodley will star as the Cancer-struck protagonist, Hazel Grace Lancaster, and Ansel Elgort will playing opposite her in the much coveted role of Augustus Waters.

Ansel Elgort as Augustus "Gus" Waters and Shailene Woodley as Hazel Grace Lancaster.

They should've gone with Brenton Thwaites! He was one of the five that the production considered for the role of Gus, along with Nick Robinson, Noah Silver, and Nat Wolf. Well, I can't say I'm not disappointed, because I am. And weirdly enough, both Woodley and Elgort are also cast for another book-to-movie, Divergent (by Veronica Roth), wherein they play the brother and sister roles of Beatrice and Caleb Prior. Can you say awkward?

Well, I think it's too early for me to be that disappointed, considering these books  practically rocked planet earth to the core last year by winning Goodreads Choice Award 2012 for Young Adult Fiction (The Fault in Our Stars) and Young Adult Fantasy and Science Fiction (Insurgent, Divergent's book 2). I'll keep my fingers crossed! And I cant help thinking Shailene Woodley must be one heck of an actress to be bagging both leading roles of these amazing books. Well, we're going to find out soon enough.

The Fault In Our Stars THE MOVIE

Ohmygosh please start defibrillating me 'cause my heart is suffering a cardiac arrest! OHMYGOSH MOM! I saw it on a blog and couldn't believe it, I had to go on Green's twitter to verify. I HAD TO. For the life of me, I didn't expect it (I did really, but not like this.)  Someone please pinch me! Pinch me now!

It's making me look like

Although what I'm really feeling is more like this

Read his twitter, along with tons of other articles on who's directing, possible actors, and stopped by his youtube. Anyway, since everybody's doing it (so much for the girl who doesn't succumb to peer pressure), Imma do my own Who should they cast to play who? thing. Yeah, let's go right at it because it's impossible for me to be thinking clearly in about 12 minutes (hopefully by then, this entry would have been signed, sealed and posted)

     While I was reading TFOIS...

I was imagining my friend (but had to break his leg and amputate him in order to achieve the real thing) as Gus and myself as Hazel (wut? A girl can dream right?) but since the proximity of Hollywood to my house is like Ulaanbaatar to Halley the comet, I suppose I can think of someone else promising enough for the role.. So voila! Here is my cast:

Andrew Garfield as Augustus Waters.
(Peter Parker in Spiderman)

or let's young it up with Grant Gustin
(Sebastian from Glee; Campbell from 90210)

and Sami Gayle should be Hazel Grace Lancaster, hands down!

(Alison from Stolen)

I'm really hoping it's not going to be Emma Watson AGAIN (reason as capitalized). Many young celebrities show great potential, I hope the producers, the casting people give them equal consideration. Anyway, I'm always inclined to ask for your opinion. Who would you cast? Have you read the book in the first place? If not, why haven't you? LOL

Iron Fey Comic Book

OH MY GOSH, MOM! Julie Kagawa (author of the number 1 fey book in the world, methinks) just announced a comic version to "The Iron King". If you didn't already know, I loved this series and am jumping over the moon at the thought of Ash being comic-ized! They're still in the process of making the comic and need all the support they can get (donate). But you can check out more about this...

Julie K's Blog
and the tentative cover... (am I allowed to post this?)

In A Frenzy

So. School resumes tomorrow. For everybody else at school, that is. Well, it should for me too but I haven't enrolled myself yet since my transcripts are still far away from home (meanwhile I've been calling the people from Silliman tirelessly since Monday, crossing my fingers they would just mail them to me already). Sigh. If only it were that simple. But anyway, this isn't gonna bring me down because while I was sitting around, trying to be patient with aformentioned-school-enclosed-in-a-parenthesis, I managed to wriggle in a book series in-between the supposedly busy schedule of a maid of honor. I read the whole Iron Fey Series (Iron King, Iron Daughter, Iron Queen and Iron Knight) by Julie Kagawa. And I just want to say one thing: BEST CONCLUSION FOR A SERIES YET. Okay, six things then. The series I read was of four books, about faeries (yes! finally, no more leeches!), lore, adventure and love. Oh my gosh, I'm starting to remember it and my eyes are welling up again. A huge mass of emotion is inside my kidneys right now. Dazed, confused, happy, sad. Je nais sais quoi! It was such a great end, but I'm so sad it has to come to an end... I can't help it, even as I'm typing this, I am struggling between externally giggling or wincing or just outrightly laughing and my mother might as well think I'm going nuttier than a fruitcake. But fear not, I am completely able to hold my sentiments at bay when the situation calls for it.

Anywho, I think I'm quite done with my ranting now. I might as well leave you an image to chew on while I'm gone.

Spook you up

POST POST.

Why hello there wonderful people of the internet! Has it been a day? How are you and your beautiful, happy selves? Why am I typing like a shamefully optimistic madwoman in the world? Well for one, I'm happy that I'm finally a nonslave of school and that I was able to finish three books today. Well I started reading Fissure by Nicole Williams two weeks ago but because of the book diet I put myself on (not to mention stuck through), I was held from it until yesternight. I resumed from page 49 and read til a minute before midnight and continued the morning after. When I finished that, I immediately moved onto the sequel Fusion. I was appalled that the author wrote a 136 page sequel to a 236 page start.

So I managed that quickly and read my third book for that day, Graceling

I had mixed emotions for that book and all about it you could read in my book review blog (if I just come around to review all three books in one day--but I'm feeling extremely lazy at the moment).

Anywho, I finished them books at around half past five in the afternoon and shamelessly  ran (literally because no one was home) to shower before going to church for our weekly intercessory meet. Well that was my day, hope yours was as interesting as mine!

A truth universally acknowledged...

Oh Mr. Darcy! how I ardently admire and love you too :**

there goes my fairytale.
oh well. it was nice while it lasted.
I might as well re-read P & P over the break.

Oh and a picture from the after party (meaning my solitary party at home with the camera) of our thanksgiving party at church yesterday. Happy 26th, BHCCCI!

Book diet.

Its two weeks shy the end of classes and I'd vow to myself I would be going the extra mile to study. I would be book dieting for two whole weeks (but expect reviews still, for I'd be reviewing my previous reads) and blog dieting on the actual week of the exams.

I personally dont think I 'd survive (books are partially my life). But then again I NEED to redeem myself (not to mention my grades). So yeah, here I come!

P.s
I just kind of realized that by not reading any book at all I wouldn't be book dieting but book fasting without spiritual ties. Hm, well whatever we call it so long as we mean it.
