Movie: Silver Lining Playbook

My mom and sisters decided to watch Silver Linings Playbook last week while I was editing our NCP on my/Deb's laptop. I thought they were going to watch 'Mama' so I didn't bother joining in (officially sworn off horror movies - 2013 resolution) but then I heard Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro talking and I immediately marooned myself over the carpet and the NCP was remembered no more (until very much later).

I start the movie with Pat (Cooper) getting out of mental rehab, he and his OCD father (DeNiro) were discussing Brad's peculiar fashion choices. I seriously cannot imagine having an OCD husband and a bipolar son. I would be mad to tears. Anyway, Pat got in for murdering his colleague after catching him cheating with his wife. Months after, Pat gets invited by his friend to dinner where he meets nymphomaniac Tiffany (Lawrence). Their characters develop as they learn more about each other, all the while learning to let go and accept new things easing their way in in their lives.

This is so amazing. A hilarious romantic comedy priding itself with slightly disturbed leads, trashbin jogging attires, football superstitions and dancing second only to Dancing With The Stars. It's sure to give you a good laugh. The characters were played well and critically thought of. The dialogues witty and en point (although all the football superstition jargon got me scratching my belly-I must interrogate dad about what it all means) and the pacing, the climax, the ending couldn't have been better. Would recommend you to watch it with your families. I did and it lead to sporadic LOLing around the house for at least another day. Warning for language though. Gah, really one of the best RomComs I've wasted time on. And I can't believe some people haven't seen this yet! JLaw even got an Oscar for it!

Check out the trailer!

Starting A Blog: My Experience

When I first started a blog, I had good intentions, so I guess that's what you need. Whether we do it for our readers, ourselves, or both, it's what we need to get a blog up and about and going. I started writing too and some people commended me of my writing style, which I thought was very weird. I've been blogging on Ohpenda.com since September 2012. I've also been trying to climb the social intricacies of the webosphere by creating for myself a Twitter, a Facebook page and even as far as a Linkedin page. I've only just Google Analytics-ed my blog and submitted it to various Search Engines for uhh.. maximum popularity? Anyway, I'm a self-learning, self-wounding blogger when it comes to these things. Google Search is my best friend and bloggers are friends of my best friend whom I like to acquaint myself with (or rather because I rely on them for making everything possible).

I'm obviously a healthcare-inclined person because I'm a nursing student and didn't go to the School for Web Savvies in order to achieve my so-called "web success" of FINALLY learning what SEO is, knowing what in the world 3pl benefits are, and tweaking with my layouts. I don't even buy books for this because :

   (1) I only read Young Adult, YA Fantasy and the likes
   (2) I'm broke
   (3) I know I'll get bored to the bones
   (4) An internal  hemorrhage will occur since I don't know the internet jargon
   (5) I'm busy [reading the Bible, my nursing textbooks, YA, and YA Fantasy books].

But I'm a living proof that even a person who's internet-knowledge deficit can still survive the bewildering savages of the webosphere. So take heart, my dear internet noob friends!  A 24,000 mile journey begins with a single step (though we're not literally going anywhere because we're glued to this chair).

A Penny For Your Thoughts

I could ask you that but Obama doesn't think I should do so. In fact, he's planning to obliterate the possibility of the American posterity from ever laying eyes on the penny (and people still wonder why I'm Republican, haha). The penny holds such a big influence on the American people. I'm saying this and I'm not even American! But I wanna be able to use a penny when I finally get there. I practically whined to dad to save all his pennies earlier this morning. That is, before I read this article which turned me into a anti-penny-er. Haha.

Well, I dont know if its as big of a deal to you than it is to me. But I'm really a cultural sentimental kind of person. In fact, I've long acquired a 5 peso bill and wishlisited a Canadian Penny, Greecian Drachma and other currencies European countries lost to the unified Euro. I hate seeing even the tiniest part of culture lost but I seem so helpless in preventing their disposal. Because in the first place, they're creating more cons than pros. But if I had any choice in it, I dont want to say goodbye to Abe Lincoln's profile!

So, as you can see, a non-American is weighing the pros and cons of this. It's a global issue (it's really not). It's funny and I want to eat ice cream.

And thank you John Green for bringing it up. TSK TSK TSK. I'm not sure if I'm happy or not xD

Vitamins

Vitamins are my new steroids.
But instead of making me muscle-y, they just make me fat.
(LQ pictures AGAIN)

What's in there?

Centrum complete. --> 22 vitamins and minerals.
Nutrilite Fish Oil. --> I need to go fishing.
Ferrous Sulfate. --> Because I went to get my blood donated but they just couldn't extract me precious 450ml worth of blood because my hemoglobin was so low. Not the first time, and yes, it's a bummer. They told me I have to wait a month, but I'll have faith in my RBCs and try again next week... and the week after that if I need to... and the week after, until it's finally a month. This is in partial completion of my bucket list.

The Fault In Our Stars THE MOVIE

Ohmygosh please start defibrillating me 'cause my heart is suffering a cardiac arrest! OHMYGOSH MOM! I saw it on a blog and couldn't believe it, I had to go on Green's twitter to verify. I HAD TO. For the life of me, I didn't expect it (I did really, but not like this.)  Someone please pinch me! Pinch me now!

It's making me look like

Although what I'm really feeling is more like this

Read his twitter, along with tons of other articles on who's directing, possible actors, and stopped by his youtube. Anyway, since everybody's doing it (so much for the girl who doesn't succumb to peer pressure), Imma do my own Who should they cast to play who? thing. Yeah, let's go right at it because it's impossible for me to be thinking clearly in about 12 minutes (hopefully by then, this entry would have been signed, sealed and posted)

     While I was reading TFOIS...

I was imagining my friend (but had to break his leg and amputate him in order to achieve the real thing) as Gus and myself as Hazel (wut? A girl can dream right?) but since the proximity of Hollywood to my house is like Ulaanbaatar to Halley the comet, I suppose I can think of someone else promising enough for the role.. So voila! Here is my cast:

Andrew Garfield as Augustus Waters.
(Peter Parker in Spiderman)

or let's young it up with Grant Gustin
(Sebastian from Glee; Campbell from 90210)

and Sami Gayle should be Hazel Grace Lancaster, hands down!

(Alison from Stolen)

I'm really hoping it's not going to be Emma Watson AGAIN (reason as capitalized). Many young celebrities show great potential, I hope the producers, the casting people give them equal consideration. Anyway, I'm always inclined to ask for your opinion. Who would you cast? Have you read the book in the first place? If not, why haven't you? LOL

February

They say February’s the month of love, but it’s my month of red velvet--as I embark on this month-long quest of finding the perfect red cake. Well, you’ve heard my say on Kafeneio’s Red Success, now listen to me rant on Something Sweet’s Red Velvet.

YUM. Sorry for the camera.

Hot Caramel

YUM! Looks delish right? Well, it was… Something (from Something Sweet, haha). The presentation, as you can see, is very simple. While for the taste, I could tell they put in chocolate (because you can SEE and TASTE it) and some sweet icing there. The flavor could’ve been thicker, instead it was predominantly chocolate and super sweet. All you sweet-toothed out there can work with this, but I need less sweet and more flavor. I also noticed that the cake itself was a little dry. If Kafeneoi’s would be my standard, this would be a rough 7/10. Meanwhile, you can get the cake for yourself to see if you share the same sentiments as I. Their café has a very cute ambiance.

So for the umpteenth time, I am not getting any compensation for this. I can hardly imagine anyone paying me to complain about their product. So LOL, okay. So much for this!

My Valentines Day

... was almost non-existent. So let's just call it my Thursday  My Thursday was uneventful. I went on Health Center Duty and that was even more uneventful. We even ended early and.. oh wait, I played ANDAMIRO to my heart's content and Tekken 6. Was with my highschool buddies Angel and Fido. We also went around doing random things, ate KFC and I failed to take pictures. I went home early, slept and made my requirements for my Delivery Room Rotation. I think that's pretty much it. My mom was planning on taking me to Kafeneio for some great classy buffet but she forgot that she had a previous engagement with her company people so yeah. Maybe next time then. Oh, and she went home very late and brought us these red velvet cupcakes from Kafeneio. Saw them when I woke up first thing in the morning (more like drooled over them). They're simply amazing!

Didn't hesitate in devouring the red sweetness and yeah, yeah. BEST CUPCAKE EVER! Well, I'm going to try to explain it to you. I'm no food critique, but here goes. The moment it escaped the crystal confines of its packaging, you can immediately smell the luscious aroma of the velvet cupcake. I could taste it in my mouth (bad joke to my sister Abby who's currently fasting) and it didn't take a while for me to actually have it in the velvet confines of my buccal cavity. I thought it was gonna be one of those uber sweet desserts, but it wasnt! It was so delicious, the flavor so rich yet so controlled. There was no bitter aftertaste that I've grown accustomed to, having consumed many of its kind. Overall I think this is the bestest best red velvet I've ever had!

They didn't pay me anything for this entry. This is my sincere opinion of the product, that I hope you will share if you ever have the pleasure of consuming.

What to think of your speech impediment

A person recently came up to me to see if I could help him with a speech. And I would be delighted to help but there's only one problem, I am a very bad speaker (that's why I stick to writing *wink*). You see I had a point in my life where I couldn't speak properly, I had a stammer/stutter, garbled words and repeated myself for no valid reason. I used to despise myself because of it, or find it ridiculous that I had it. You see, not many people in my country have speech impediments, that said, I felt insecure inside. But I realized that we shouldn't let impediments, whatever they may be, get in the way of us feeling good about ourselves and being the best person we can be. The moment I started to change my perspective about my speech was the very moment I started overcoming the condition I was in. I practiced, I encouraged myself, and by God's grace, I changed. I didn't even need to see a therapist or a shrink. And all it took was that moment of reflection for me. Now I know it could be different for everyone of us, you may be going to therapy for your speech, but get this--it won't change if you don't allow it too. Call it the placebo effect or whatever, but things are better when you look at it at a better angle. So without further ado, I would like to present you the beautiful ways of looking at your speech "impediment".

The LISSSP
Has got to be the sexiest speech impediment known to the world (think Michael Buble). It adds a ZING to everything (pun intended--PLEASE see what I did there) and you cant even say the word without showcasing that beautiful lisp. Whether it's congenital or acquired (most likely teeth prison or retainers), we should embrace it and not succumb to the degradation that some not-so-angelic peers of ours try to associate with it. Think of it as an artistic expression, and see Slam genius, George Watsky, speaking his poem 'S for Lisp' at the 2010 Collegiate National Poetry Slam.

The ST-ST-STUTTER
Is mostly associated with nerds. But take into consideration that nerds have infiltrated the fashion world recently and what better way to supplement the fashion statement but by incorporating the classical accessory--the stutter. You shouldn't feel bad about it, there is an abundant supply of stutterers that has taken the world by storm. Notably, Noah from The Notebook, Moses, Bruce Willis, Marilyn Monroe, and even Winston Churchill!

The S-TAMMERS
Halting after a sentence, pausing every once in a while is acceptable and expected. We just like took that lesson to a whole new level. But this pause-ophilia isn't even that bad. It's thrilling and shy. One movie that would sum up everything people should know about stutters is The King's Speech. Go watch it if you haven't! It's inspiring and just plain oh-some!

The APRAXIA
Is not that common with adults, but if you have it, consider yourself rarer than platinum. So what's wrong with saying "topato"? It's cute and gives people a puzzle to solve, it's mind boggling and you need to use a deeper intelligence to understand it. Hey, some people purposely say words backwards, why all the judgment with something so involuntarily done? If your sibling or your child or just somebody you know has apraxia, love them. Talk to them often, read to them and let them read stories too (preferably no Grimm Brothers). Oh yeah, I think it's also worth mentioning wizard next door, Daniel Radcliffe, has a mild form of apraxia. But it surely didn't stop him from zapping old Voldy to where light don't shine (no, I seriously don't mean "down there")

So yeah, maybe a speech therapist can help, but like I said, it doesn't change when you keep wallowing about it or hate yourself for it, or don't want to change it. Sometimes all we need is that extra push or if until then we dont budge, the extra kick. We should start by building our confidence, then setting our hearts to it, practice, practice, practice. After all, nobody gets every tongue twister the first time (except those who can LOL)

BUH-LEE-DAT!

Iron Fey Comic Book

OH MY GOSH, MOM! Julie Kagawa (author of the number 1 fey book in the world, methinks) just announced a comic version to "The Iron King". If you didn't already know, I loved this series and am jumping over the moon at the thought of Ash being comic-ized! They're still in the process of making the comic and need all the support they can get (donate). But you can check out more about this...

Julie K's Blog
and the tentative cover... (am I allowed to post this?)

From Now On

Hey guys! Definitely concentrating more on blogging this year! As a matter of fact, I joined our local blogging community last night and was overwhelmed by the countless possibilities of blogging, not just for leisure but for budget purposes. Well, I hope you'll continue to support me. I'll try to post often and not flood this blog with ads or paid posts. I'd like to assure you it'll still be me, writing for you and for my own benefit. Let's have a wonderful year! (although I guess this inspirational talk is a month late) Hope to see a more dynamic blogger in me, with lots of opinions and how to's on my fields of leisure and expertise. (Which include books, writing, health, nursing and community maybe). And I'm thinking of opening a CDO blog soon too. I hope you get around to supporting that too.

Well this is it for now. Stay tuned for more Pennings.

Lots of lovin'

Anticipating a Long Weekend

My weekends have always been busy, what with all the church activities, nursing major, projects and family bonding moments I've committed myself to. But this weekend will be, as I've allowed it, even busier than normal. Tomorrow, I'm attending our Prayer Breakfast Fellowship at 6 in the morning, as I always do with my family. I have Semi Finals for both my major and Pharmacology. At four pm, I'm planning to join my local blogger community at  McDonald's and by six, I have to get to my high school for our annual alumni reunion (yes, that committed). I have to go home by eight or eight thirty so I can wake up early on Sunday as I'm running this Red Cross Fun Run thing that Pastor John encouraged me to go for. I actually invited some of my sedentary/light activity nursing friends but, as I expected they reasoned it's the time to debrief from our stressful exams. The way I see it, running / jogging is the best way I can relieve myself. I used to think the polar opposite, but when I tried it myself, I was quite happy with the results. Anyway, I have to finish the 5k run in 30mins more or less, because our Sunday Service starts at 9am. After that, we proceed to the much needed family bonding time and I squeeze in making homework and projects somewhere in between all these things.

So yeah, it'll be quite a busy and active weekend for me. I won't be able to post anything new until Monday... if I can actually keep myself from the computer. I dont think I'll be able to do it though. Not when I've found the rest of the pictures from the Wedding. Expect another image-heavy post of fluffness overload sometime this week...

It's time I go. Au revoir!

Learning Is Everywhere

We all have multiple skills, multiple intelligence, multiple adept qualities that make us who we are. Some of them we learn at school, or at work, or at home, at church, on a boat, online, from our teachers, from our preachers, from our parents, from our peers. But no matter what they are, we've learned them and, at some level, mastered them. Earlier psychologists believed personal traits are innate, genetic, intrinsic while others argue that they’re developed, environmental and altering. The studies of modern psychology lead us to believe that it’s actually the combination of both that deliver us our personal traits. Why am I saying all these? And where does this knowledge come from?

I am convinced I learned this from, among many things, but am not entirely won over that one has to finish all 20 years of scholarly penance in order to go somewhere, be someone, in this world. Not that I’m hating on school here, if that’s what you think. Merely stating the fact that not everything we learn at school are useful, like how everything we learn in the streets are not necessarily beneficial.

As I’ve already said but will repeat again to erase any misgivings you have on the topic: I am no school-hater. In fact, I’m in school, and although I’m not the sharpest needle in the sewing kit (because those needles hurt), I try to keep up and absorb everything I can while I still can. But sometimes I find that some things they teach us—like the size of the sun or the distance from the earth to the sun—are NTK (Nice To Know) but don’t have purpose in my knowing. Now I know for you sun-geeks that this information “is like, the biggest revelation ever since Copernicus said the earth circled the sun” but where I currently have no plans to go on a cruise trip to Jupiter, it doesn’t impact me in the big way it does to you, sun-geeks.

Okay, I think I’ve gone really off-topic here but my point is that there are special skills that we can develop that we don’t really need to go to school for in order to improve. Like photography, caring, cooking, conversationalism, listening, speaking languages, writing, singing, and even fast reading. And although we can always take courses to improve these areas, they’re not necessarily learned in school and may be developed by discussions, watching videos, listening to audio tapes, looking at samples, reading, googling, etc. So yeah, go ahead and improve yourself, sister / brother! Go google a special skill today!
